It is a new quarter so we are starting with new spelling homework. You can find this week's words in the spelling folder along with the homework sheet.
Thank you for all of the valentines. This class is a bunch of sweeties.
This week we had fun observing our pet rocks and using measurement tools. In Social Studies we are learning about Famous Americans. This week it was George Washington and next week will be.......
Have a wonderful three day weekend!
Stay safe and warm inside.
- practice math (especially fractions) on IXL
- practice your spelling words
- write stories about your snow adventures
I'll see you some time next week. (:
Happy New Year!
We jumped right into work in 2016. This week we explored fractions in math and started talking about American Symbols in Social Studies.
Please remember to dress your child in clothes appropriate for the weather. It was cold this week! Also your child needs a water bottle with a pop top lid to stay hyrdrated during the day.
December has flown by between the field trip, gingerbread house fun, our winter celebration, and the Polar Express Day. Please read the first grade newsletter that your student is bringing home today highlighting what we have been learning this month. Please sign one of the copies of the interims and return it to school on January 4th.
Enjoy the break, and I will see everyone again next year. Happy New Year!
We had a great time on our field trip yesterday to see Junie B. Jones at the Hylton Performing Arts Center. Junie B. Jones is quite a character. We are familiar with her because of the read alouds that I have been reading in the classroom. I think they enjoyed putting a face with the characters in the book.
We have finished our past , present, and future unit in Social Studies. Now we will be starting economics.....
In math we are collecting data and learning about ways to display it. Plus, of course reading and writing which is done all the time every day.
During this crazy week we have finished up our map of Virginia and showed Mrs. Grasse what we know about maps. We continued listening to a Junie B. Jones First Graders book about Thanksgiving. We think she is just like us!
Next week we will talk more about past and present.
Friday, November 6th
We had visitors from the Marine Museum come to visit the first grade. We went to the story room and learned the difference between past and present. There were things that the first graders could look at and touch to better understand the concept of past and present. It was a great preview of things to come soon in the classroom.
Last week in the classroom we worked on learning the parts of the map and using a compass rose.
Remember there is no school today or tomorrow. Enjoy your time off and I will see you on Wednesday. Keep reading!
Fun was had by all on Friday as we investigated pumpkins. Thank you to the volunteers who came in and helped with the stations. It was a great success!
We have finished talking about day and night in science and will be starting to learn about maps and the different parts of a map. Please practice adding and subtracting facts 1-10.
We are excited about investigating pumpkins this Friday,October 23rd. Do they float or sink, what is the circumference of different sizes of pumpkins, plus carving pumpkins and finding out what is inside.
We are learning about what makes day and night. Plus visualizing what we are reading and trying to learn new sight words and words in the -ip family. We are constantly growing and learning.
We finished both of our math and reading pre-tests last week so we can resume our regular schedule now.
For the Fall Celebration your child may bring in a costume to celebrate in. The costume must be something that he or she can put on by themselves. Have fun coming up with your riddle.
Thank you for those who attended the Back to School Night last week. The sign ups for conferences came home in the backpacks on Friday along with the Book It Pizza Hut program for October. They were excited about this! Also the behavior calendar for October with the encore specials schedule for the month.
I would appreciate help on Fridays stuffing take home folders with the papers and announcements of the week. Please let me know if you could help me out with this.
Next week :
story problems with addition and subtraction and math pre-test
seasons with the sun and the moon
writing about themselves
We will be having fun!
The first spelling homework is coming home tonight. I have put this week's words and spelling homework ideas in a folder marked spelling. The spelling homework is due every Friday.
Have a good afternoon!
