The date of the PTA Basket Auction and Dance has changed to April 29th. Please continue to send in items for our cake decorating basket! Thank you.
This year our book orders can be done online! To do this just go to www.scholastic.com/readingclub. There, you can click a link to "CONNECT TO YOUR TEACHER." It will prompt you to type in an activation code. Our class' code is P9RV8. One of our class' main focus points this year is increasing reading stamina. The Scholastic book order is a great way to find new and exciting books!
Online ordering is the easiest way to get your child books; however, if you would prefer a catalog just have your child ask and I can do my best to get you one. This book order is due by 3/1/16.
Short week 2/17-2/19
This week in room 113:
Reading - Discussing making inferences and using connections to create an inference. What is an inference and how do they help us to become better?
Writing - Continue to write fairy tales while editing and adding greater detail. In spelling students are working on Short i/Long i sounds.
Science - We will be starting our magnets unit. Students will be using real magnets to explore how they interact with each other. Students will need to know and review the vocabulary for this unit.
Math - We starting a new unit called "How many floors? How many rooms?" to discuss finding patterns. Students will need to know the difference between a growing pattern and a repeating pattern.
Report cards will be sent home today, 2/17/16. The orange folder must be signed and returned to Mr. Rundle as soon as possible.
Plans for 2/2-2/5
I hope everyone enjoyed their surprise snowcation and managed to stay warm! This week we are going to be catching up on many of the things that we had started before Jonas came through. In reading we are continuing compound words and in writing we will keep reading Aunt Isabel Tells a Good One and creating our own fairy tales. In social studies we will continue to look at different economic terms and lastly in math we will be playing games to help review adding two digit numbers.
One new thing that we are starting this week is SPELLING. You will notice that your child will come home every night with a new spelling assignment to help them practice the weeks word list. Although it is important to know how to spell the word list, the main goal of our spelling is to understand the specific skill for that week. This week we are working on "Short A/Long A" sounds.
This week in Room 113!
Math: This week we are working on grouping numbers by 2's, 5's, and 10's. We are also adding/subtracting two-digit numbers. A great way to practice this at home is by using money! Students can use play money to practice totaling change up to a dollar.
Reading: We are working on identifying story elements such as character, setting, problem, and solution! Students can practice this with their nightly reading by asking them simple comprehension questions.
Writing: We have started our fairy tale unit. Students are working on writing their own fairy tales and discussing the different elements of a fairy tale!
Social Studies: In our economics unit we have been identifying natural, capital, and human resources. We have been reading many books like The Giving Tree and Charlie Needs a Cloak to search for what resources are used in these text!
Please remember to return one signed copy of the interim progress reports that were sent home on the Friday before break. Two copies were sent home, but only one needs to be signed and returned.

December Reading Challenge
Throughout the month of December Signal Hill is participating in the "All Aboard Reading" challenge! We have a school wide goal to read for 200,000 minutes before December 18th. Room 113 can definitely contribute to this effort by continuing to read nightly for 20 minutes! If we do, we will be watching the Polar Express and wearing pajamas on December 18th! Papers were sent home before Thanksgiving break about how to keep track of your child's minutes. We will be using that log for this month instead of our normal monthly reading log. Happy reading!
Raz-Kids and iXL
During parent-teacher conferences I mentioned iXL and Raz-Kids to many of you! I attached a link to each of these sites on my webpage. Raz-Kids is a great tool for students to practice reading comprehension skills. Students may login by using the username "trundle" and then selecting their name from the list.
I sent home login information for iXL a few weeks ago. If you misplaced your child's username and password please don't hesitate to get in touch with me!
Week in Review
This week we moved past Unit 1 of math and into Unit 2. Unit 2 focuses on Geometry. Students have been using many manipulative such as pattern blocks and Geoblocks to explore 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. We wrapped up our science unit on the life cycles and switched back into social studies. Our social studies unit is about Famous Americans. This week we learned all about George Washington and next week we will focus on Abe Lincoln and Susan B. Anthony.
In this week's Friday Folder parents will find a letter regarding the iXL online math program. Students will have access to this tool at home as well as in school. This program is a fantastic way to practice all of the skills that we are learning in the classroom. The letter will include the login information for your child. If you have any questions about the letter or how to access iXL please feel free to ask me!
October Book Orders (Due 10/16)
In Friday Folders I sent home the October Scholastic book orders. Again, I strongly encourage you to consider purchasing books to fill your child's Reading Log. The easiest method to order these books is from Scholastic's website using our class code (P9RV8). The book orders are due no later than October 16th.
Reminder that all September Scholastic book orders are due on September 30th. I will be submitting the final order at the end of the school day on Wednesday. The directions to do so online can be found in a previous post. Happy reading!
