News January 4th
Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful and restful break!
Many of you worked very hard on your level A Popcorn words. I gave out 7 more awards today. That brings our class total to 15 awards, 7 students who need 1 or two (or who have forgotten 1 or 2) and 5 students making steady progress. Way to go!
We will be studying winter weather and its effects on animals and people. We will learn how animals prepare for winter and study people that live and adapt in cold environments. This includes hibernation, temperature and how water changes forms.
Don't forget to wear WARM COATS and bring HATS and GLOVES or MITTENS EVERY DAY!
Many of our lessons will encourage writing facts, applying high-frequency words and letter sounds.
We will also continue our guided reading groups, shared reading, interactive writing and writing workshop.
See January Calendar attached in files below.

I hope everyone enjoyed Thanksgiving with family, and friends. The class enjoyed food and friendship time. The students looked awesome in their patterned headbands, necklaces and vests. I also believe the students learned about the first Thanksgiving and how it began. Please read our Pilgrim and Turkey books and ask them how to plant corn.
Language/Reading: Shared reading activities and guided reading groups. We will be focusing on reading strategies. The reading groups allow me to focus on the individual needs of the students. Students who are not in a reading group are working on independent jobs and completing center work.
S.S./Science: Learning about our five senses. We will do many activities and experiments as well as create a book to show our learning.
Math: Number sense
Writing Workshop: We will be doing more independent writing this month. This will consist of journal writing as a morning job and guided writing during guided reading groups. Many of our seasonal projects will also include writing and labeling. Encourage your child to write about what he/she is interested in.
Home/School Connection: Don’t forget the “All Aboard” reading program and the Book It Reading programs! Turn in your "All Aboard" calendar on Fridays, so we can record the minutes. Also, encourage your child to read books on Razz-Kids. Practice our pop-corn words so your child will earn their certificate and healthy snack.

We had 14 students earn their free pizza for October. I hope you are all working on your November Book It form! Have your child read ten books and help them record the titles on the form. We encourage the books to be the books the we have made in school, library books or other favorites in your house. Please send in and your child will receive a free Pizza Hut certificate.
I have attached the sight word list below (popcorn words). Please feel free to work with these words at home. We will begin testing levels soon and send your child home with a bag of popcorn to pop and celebrate their achievement when they pass a level.
Weekly News September 18
We have had a fantastic week! Most of the class is understanding our schedule and routines. The most often asked questions are "Is lunch soon?" and " How much longer until we go home?" In between they are working hard and learning a lot. We are working on being quality students. Students know to look at the teacher, listen, follow directions, sit criss-cross applesauce on the carpet, walk with no talking in the hallways, and act in a safe way. We are working on learning how to tell people when we are upset. "Stop, I don't like when you....." We are learning how to apologize. "I am sorry I hurt your.... I will not do that to you again." Please read the behavior letter sent home today. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
In Language Arts we have worked on letter recognition (A,a in particular), color and color word recognition (brown, red, yellow, green and purple), how to write straight and diagonal straight lines on our lined wipe boards, and making an individual Brown Bear What Do You See book.
In Math we have worked on understanding the calendar, counting the days we have attended school, how to read and write numbers 1-10, how to make a pattern, and graphing the weather, boys and girls and favorite color.
Popcorn Friday was a great day to end our 14th day at school.
