POPCORN WORDS HOMEWORK!
Please make sure to check your child's Pirate Binder and find their "popcorn words" list so they can do their homework (in their composition notebook). Each week they need to work with their words three different nights and then bring it back to school on Friday. I will look at their notebooks over the weekend and return it to them on Monday. They are tested weekly on them. Once they have mastered one list they will receive a pack of popcorn and then move on to the next list. Thank you for your help in making our little buccaneers successful readers! (Look under "homework" for specifics.)
Please click on the Raz-kids link under "Links" to the right on our class page to access the Reading A-Z website. My teacher name is rdiduro. If you can, please have your child go on Raz-kids about 20 minutes each night. After reading they are quizzed on each book. I receive data on their reading skills and can prepare lessons based on the results of their quizzes.
Reading out loud to a child is one of the most important things a parent can do to prepare them for future academic success. Many parents ask if they should be reading to their child, or if their child should be doing all the reading. The answer is BOTH. A balance of reading and being read to is the "key to the success" of a beginning reader.
What are the benefits of reading aloud to your child?
Reading aloud helps to bond the parent and child.
Being read to helps a child understand the purpose of the printed word.
Being read to builds a child's vocabulary.
Being read to introduces a child to an exciting world of learning and entertainment.
Jake the Never Land Pirate!
Ahoy there Mateys! The adventure has started! Jake is making his way around the classroom. Each little buccaneer will have multiple opportunities to take Jake home in his backpack for a visit. They will draw a picture and write a few sentences about their adventures in our class journal. The next day they will have the opportunity to share their adventure with the class. This will teach responsibility and it also goes along with our Language Arts curriculum. Please try to be specific/creative when writing about your adventures. Argh!!!
ATTENTION Little "buccaneers": Starting this Friday we will have a time for one boy and one girl to share a special item (a small toy or trophy) in the form of a mystery box. The boxes will be sent home on Monday so that you can find something that will fit in them. Then on Friday you will need to bring them back in with your clues. (You will need to write three clues to describe the item.) And the class will try to guess what is in the mystery box. Each child should have multiple times to share throughout the year.
