Miss Fountain - Student Teacher in Music
Hello Parents/Guardians of Signal Hill Elementary School!
My name is Miss Katie Fountain, and I will be student teaching at Signal Hill for the next seven weeks in Mrs. Jennie Nichols’ classroom. I am currently finishing my Bachelors of Music Education from Longwood University and am graduating in May. I will be observing, planning and preparing lessons to teach with Mrs. Nichols and by myself as I become more comfortable with your students. Prior to working with Mrs. Nichols, I have volunteered with a small high school chorus classroom where I taught for twice a week for two semesters in the morning and conducted the students in two concerts. I have also observed and taught in an elementary school classroom, and two middle school classrooms, but I look forward to working more closely with the Signal Hill students.
I am a Prince William County native; I attended Bennett E.S., Parkside M.S., and Osbourn Park H.S. During my time as a PWCS student I participated in four All-County Choruses and three All-District Choruses, been in several school theatre productions including Annie, Pirates of Penzance and The Music Man. At Longwood, I helped our choral director run Longwood’s Honors Choir, where local high school students from the surrounding counties come to Longwood to perform together under the direction of our faculty. I taught and reviewed the music with sections, and ran a technical rehearsal.
Music has been a large part of my life, and from about the age of 16 I knew I wanted to be a music teacher. Music allows me to connect with people in deep ways, and through music I can teach students in many different ways. Music taps not only into the arts but into math, science, history, world language and critical reading skills as well. During my time with your students I hope to encourage them to learn more about music, and how music is related to their other subjects. I look forward to getting to know you and your students over the next seven weeks.

The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra!
Second and third grade students are learning about the instruments of the orchestra. They are learning about the four musical instrument families; brass, percussion, strings, and woodwinds. In class we read and listened to the book "Never Play Music Right Next to the Zoo" by John Lithgow. We also started to explore the website for Benjamin Britten's "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra". This website (below) contains a review of the four instrument families as well as activities and games about the instruments of the orchestra. Enjoy!

Meet Mrs. Nichols!
I am Mrs. Nichols and I teach music at Signal Hill! I love learning to play different instruments. When I was in school I learned how to play the flute. I loved playing the flute so much that I decided to play in many ensembles, including jazz bands, concert bands, and marching bands. My husband is also a musician and plays the trumpet. We love attending concerts all over Northern Virginia and Washington, DC. Click on my name at the top of this webpage to learn more about music at Signal Hill Elementary School.
I can't wait to learn more about all of our Signal Hill Pandas!
