Virtual Teaching Update and 3rd Grade Plan 4/13/20

Hello all parents,

I hope everyone enjoyed their “spring break”! I had a nice week just playing with my daughter and getting yard work done with my husband. We had a nice Easter dinner in our front yard with our neighbors across the street with our folding tables 6 feet apart! HAHA Anything to make life as normal as possible right now.

Like I said a week ago, the third-grade team met today and came up with a plan on how we will be teaching “virtually” for now and how we will cover the new regulation by Dr. Walts to have 60 min of instruction per subject and per week. We have created a weekly schedule that will have a little bit of math and reading each day Monday through Thursday. Science and social studies will be split amongst those days with social studies being Mondays and Wednesdays and science being Tuesdays and Thursdays. Our schedule does not have times these activities need to be done, but instead students can complete them at a time that works best for the family at home on that day. On Fridays, students will be encouraged to write. We would like the students to write a letter to the class about their week and then record themselves reading the letters on flipgrid so others can respond to them. If you cannot access flipgrid you can email your letters to me.

Each week I will email out the weekly schedule on Monday mornings and post it to the third-grade team page, as well as my personal class page. None of these assignments are a grade, they are just continuing your child’s education and practice on material previously taught this year.

We will be beginning to use FlipGrid which is a fun interactive site that students can record and watch videos assigned as well as respond to videos. This will be assigned weekly for various subjects to come. Here is the link to our class FlipGrid. All that the students will need to sign in is click this link (Click here for FlipGrid) and then type in their 6 digit lunch number/library number. If for whatever reason your student does not remember their number, please email me and I can send it to you.

We will also be using readworks.org as well as a site for practicing. I have created the class an account. This is how the students will login to it. Students will go to readworks.org/students. Students will then enter the class code AAMVJL. Then they click on their name and their password is their lunch/library 6-digit number. If for whatever reason your student does not remember their number, please email me and I can send it to you. In here is where students can find any reading activities assigned to them. If an assignment is assigned to them in readworks, it will be in the weekly schedule emailed on Monday mornings and on the third-grade webpage.

For this week, today was a “work day” for us teachers and students are not required to complete any work because it is their last day of “spring break”. This new plan will be starting tomorrow and this week’s weekly schedule will be emailed out tomorrow morning and be posted to the webpages. We will also be starting back up our daily zoom meet ups. In our zoom meet ups, we will be completing a problem of the day (math problem) and reading a chapter from our read aloud, which still is The Chocolate Touch. Our zoom meeting time will change to 10:30 am for now on each day. I will also have “office hours” each day from 1-2 pm that I will be readily available at my computer for any questions your student has. I will still be available all other times by email, just during that hour each day I will be at my computer if there is something that needs urgent attention.

I am sorry for the extremely long email today. I just want to make sure everyone is aware at what is going to happen with our new “virtual teaching”. I hope to see as many of you as I can tomorrow morning on zoom at 10:30 am!

Have a great rest of your Monday,

Mrs. Mullins

Fun Animal Reseach  3/31/20

Dear Parents,

Right before we left for the year because of COVID-19, the third-grade team was preparing for a fun and interactive research project. We have decided to make this project an at home activity now. It is NOT a grade or a requirement, just something fun the students can do at home while continuing their at home distance learning.

The student will pick an animal out of the list provided. Not all animals will be easy to research, so please try to guide your student through the picking process. Then they will print out the pages of the pennants with that animal. Once they pick an animal, they can start the research. They will answer each section of the pennant by researching the answers. Once pennants are complete, please take a picture of your student with the pennant and email it to your teacher! We would like to compile the pictures as a team and post to our 3rd grade web page.

We ask to have projects completed and pictures sent to the teachers by April 14th. Remember, this is not a grade or a requirement, just something fun for the students to show what they remember about what we studied in science this year!

Click here for students to have the list of animals to choose from as well as the printable pennants.

Your student can safely research using the Signal Hill Library page. Click here to access it and then your student can go to safe links from here to research. Also, another safe search engine is Kidtopia. Click here to access it as well. We teachers ask that an adult assist the student with researching to make sure all students are properly researching safely online. There is also a document given by Mrs. Stavros in the library that has the login credentials, please just email me asking for the logins and I will send them to you.

I hope that all students have fun completing this activity and ilook forward to seeing the final products!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Mullins

3/23/20 UPDATE:

Parents,

The 3rd grade team is posting our pacing calendars for both Math and Language Arts. We use these to base our instruction and cadence day by day. The Math pacing calendar is created by the Math department.  The Language Arts calendar is created by our team, and is based on unit guides and pacing guides that the Language Arts department provides.

We are posting these so that you all have them at home to reference, and know what was already taught. Please do not work on any standards or activities that come after March 13th on either calendar. We are being asked by the school division to have students only review material that was already taught and nothing new for the time being.  There are no assignments in these guides or calendars, just reference material for you all to have. We will be posting activities for students to complete and practice with starting March 30th, so please expect another update at that time. Please continue to take this time to relax and bond while practicing "social distancing" and staying healthy!

Also, don't forget to take advantage of some of the online resources we have posted earlier. These are great resources to continue practicing at home. I am linking under this message the resources again. Also, our math text book Origo, has created a math at home approach. It is an awesome resource and also gives the parent step by step directions. This link is under here as well. There are weekly lessons and right now there is only week 1, but they told us they will be adding more. REMEMBER NONE OF THIS IS A REQUIREMENT AT THIS TIME, JUST GREAT RESOURCES FOR YOU TO HAVE TO PRACTICE.
