History

Signal Hill Elementary School opened in 2000 as a replacement for Parkside Elementary School. Parkside Elementary previously shared the building that is now fully occupied by Parkside Middle School. The school is named after nearby Signal Hill, which served as a Confederate observation post during the Civil War. Soldiers stationed there alerted Confederate forces to the Union’s attempt to flank Southern positions during the early stages of the First Battle of Manassas. Due to the signaling methods used, this event is often cited as the first use of telecommunication in a battle.
